Real World Reading and Writing in a Digital Age
Presented by Carolee Dean & Mary Jo O’Neill

Part 1 – 90 minutes Carolee Dean will share strategies for reading narrative non-fiction stories as a springboard and inspiration for authentic writing activities with step-by-step directions, lesson plans, questions, and templates (for both in-person and virtual learners) for the following: A. Letter to the Author: Exploring the format of a letter as a foundation for expository writing B. Become an Author: Using picture books as models for creating original text. B. Reminiscing: Asking questions about books that help form connections to our experiences. C. Memoir: Reading memoir to help form our own autobiographical memories and write personal narratives.

Part 2 – 90 minutes Mary Jo O’Neill will discuss strategies for sharing personal narratives for the purpose of self-advocacy through the following: A. Crafting Your Personal Story for the Purpose of Advocacy (drafting, outlining, writing) B. Determining where and when to share your story. C. Letter to the Teacher (college, high school, or grade school) D. Parents and The Family Story: Writing the Family Story as a form of advocacy
